"Turmeric – The Golden Spice" is a deep, golden-orange spice known for adding color, flavor and nutrition to foods. Because of its brilliant yellow color, turmeric is also known as “Indian saffron.” A relative of ginger, turmeric comes from the rhizome (root) of a native Asian plant and has been used in cooking and medicine dating back nearly 4000 years.  It is known in Sanskrit as Haridra, which means to spread deep yellow color, turmeric is well documented in literature of Ayurveda.

Turmeric is a product of Curcuma longa, a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the ginger family Zingiberaceae, which is native to tropical South Asia. Active ingredient in turmeric is a natural compound (polyphenol) called curcumin, which has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
